UNIQUENESS OF THE LISTENING BIBLE

The whole foundation of the Christian experience is based on Jesus Christ, for He Himself said, “I am the Way , the Truth, and the Life.” Since this is true, how can we not listen to Jesus on a daily basis?  Through the Holy Spirit, we have received the Written Word.  Regardless of how small or large, important or insignificant a verse in the Bible may be, there is a message in that verse that Jesus is speaking to each person. In this we see the power of the Word of God. Whether we are in a state of exuberant joy or in deep depression, Jesus is whispering a word to us constantly. The letters of the New Testament are no longer the experience of the Apostle Paul, Peter, or John.  As we listen to Jesus, these truths become our experience for He is now speaking to us in the first person: “I say to you…”

Listening As an Art

Listening to God is an art form of prayer that brings out your creativity and draws you into the presence of Jesus. It allows the Holy Spirit to work through you as you read the Scriptures, discovering the treasures that are in the Written Word of God. Once discovered, this art becomes a way of life as you journey with Jesus on your own road to Emmaus. You soon discover that your eyes are opened, and life becomes a communion with Jesus as you break bread (the Word) together.

Listening to God is a healing form of prayer in which your expectations come from Jesus rather than from yourself. In listening, you receive a personal message—because Jesus is always whispering to you.

Jesus Tells Us to Listen

Throughout the Gospel, Jesus speaks of the need to listen to Him.

Matthew 15:1010Then Jesus called to the crowd to come and hear. “Listen,” he said, “and try to understand…”

Mark 4:24 24Then he added, “Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more.”

John 8:47 47Anyone who belongs to God listens gladly to the words of God. But you don’t listen because you don’t belong to God.

John 10:27–28 27My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me…

John 10:2–4 2But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him.

John 14:26 26But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

Revelation 3:20  20“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends” (New Living Translation [NLT]).

In my devotional time, when I walked through the letters of the New Testament, the following pages are what Jesus has said to me as I listen through the Holy Spirit. It is interesting how the scriptures come alive through listening.

As you read the Scriptures, learn to listen to Jesus; in each verse there is a message to you.
